Probiotics (friendly bacteria) help provide a natural defence against harmful bacteria. The vast majority of bacteria in our homes are harmless and essential to our existence – that’s why they’re called probiotics (probio means ‘for life’).
But aren’t we supposed to kill all bacteria? The problem with killing all bacteria is that you also destroy those that are good for our health and protect us against germs. Even worse, using ever stronger chemicals to kill germs can be counterproductive. If bacteria become resistant to antibacterial products, we could create superbugs – harmful bacteria with a growing resistance to chemical cleaners.
So how do bacteria work? Bacteria are all around us. They settle on surfaces everywhere and multiply to fill any available space where nutrients (food, dirt, dust), oxygen and moisture exist. When that space has been filled, they stop multiplying until more nutrients are available. If a space is filled with friendly bacteria, harmful bugs can’t get in. That’s the science – it’s called competitive exclusion, and if we hang on to the friendly bacteria, they can keep on working even after we wipe!
